When does a dog become a 'senior'?
Most dogs enter their senior years between 7-10 years old, depending on breed and size. Large breeds age faster than small ones.
1. Slower Movement
Your dog may take longer to stand up, climb stairs, or go for walks. This is often the first noticeable sign of joint stiffness.
2. Changes in Sleep Patterns
Senior dogs sleep more during the day and may become restless at night.
3. Weight Changes
Either weight gain from reduced activity or weight loss from dental issues or decreased appetite.
4. Vision or Hearing Loss
Bumping into furniture, not responding to commands, or being startled easily.
5. Behavioral Changes
Increased anxiety, confusion, or changes in social behavior with family members.
What you can do: Regular vet checkups, orthopedic beds, joint supplements, and gentle exercise can significantly improve quality of life.
